After successfully recycling for 13 years Lasertech, manufacturer and supplier of Printer Consumables which is based in Warrington have launched a dedicated programme to allow St Rocco’s, Warrington’s hospice benefit from recycling printer consumable waste. The Mayor of Warrington Cllr George Warburton officially launched the Lasertech Recycling Programme on 10 January at the Lasertech head office.
Lasertech are one of only a small number of companies in the UK who are licensed to collect Used Printer Cartridges for recycling. The law states that every business has a duty of care to take reasonable steps to keep waste safe. If you give Used Printer Cartridges to someone else you must be sure they are licensed to remove, transport, recycle or dispose of it safely.
It is estimated that in 1999 alone over 7 million Printer Toner Cartridges were consumed in the UK. Only 25% of these were recycled which means that at least 5.25 million were thrown away as waste and ended up in landfills. The materials used to make a Toner Cartridge takes over 100 years to decompose, this means the Lasertech Recycling Programme will help cut the amount of waste plastic and metal ending up in the UK landfills.
Lasertech provide businesses, shops and schools throughout Warrington and surrounding areas with collection bins to save their used toner and ink cartridges in. Once the bins are full Lasertech will arrange for a free collection and pay for the empty cartridges, offering customers the option to either donate a percentage of the money to St Rocco’s, save money for their business or receive the full value in high street shopping vouchers.
Lasertech will then recycle the Used Cartridges. If the outer case of the toner cartridge is in good condition then it will be reused as a shell for a new manufactured Printer Toner Cartridge. All the internal components of the cartridges will be turned back into their base form.
The money donated to St Rocco’s hospice will enable it to continue the care and support to cancer patients and their families in and around Warrington. The Hospice has been established in Warrington since 1985, and after operating from a converted vicarage for many years finally raised funds for a new building. This opened to patients in 1999. Now, St Rocco’s Hospice is a new purpose built unit in Bewsey which has space for up to 11 in-patients and 15 day-care patients.
The staff at St Rocco’s Hospice offer symptom control, in addition to complementary and relaxation therapies such as aromatherapy, reflexology and physiotherapy. Family support is also a big part of the work at St Rocco’s. All care given is in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere where staff always have a listening ear and a friendly smile for everyone.
This service is absolutely free of charge to these patients and their families, because the service is free of charge, the donations to St Rocco’s via the Lasertech Recycling Programme will contribute to the expenditure of the hospice as well as give people of Warrington the opportunity to give something back to a much appreciated and valued service.
